Join us for a week long event as we celebrate International Week, dedicated to embracing the diversity of cultures and traditions that make our university a vibrant and interconnected global community. From Sep 4 to Sep 8, immerse yourself in the variety of events and activities that will transport you to different corners of the globe, right in the heart of our university.
We’ve got an entire lineup of interactive workshops to get you involved in our International Week celebration. Free for UOW students, there will be Chinese Calligraphy Workshop, Movie Night, Cultural Couch Convos, Ink Brush Painting as well as cultural food and dancing. Check out what’s on below.

What: Learn the basics of traditional Chinese calligraphy as the foundation of Chinese ink painting, using simple but expressive brush stroke on rice paper to creative the beautiful Chinese characters of Tain Ren He Yi – The unity of man and nature that reflect the ancient Taoist concept of harmony between humanity and natural world. Appreciate Chinese philosophy and aesthetics regarding calligraphy. This elegant brush writing technique is taught in a way that is easy to understand, yet meditative, enjoyable and relaxing.

What: learn the basics of traditional Chinese ink brush painting, using simple but expressive brush stroke on rice paper to creative some beautiful Chinese paintings of fruit. Class will start by teacher’s introduction of the basics of this Chinese brush/ink painting’s history, equipment, materials, and techniques. Students will then learn how to hold a brush in Chinese way, understand the basic principles of using it to draw dot, lines, circles and followed. Students will then learn how to mixing water with Chinese ink and colour to paint on rice paper by creative strokes that is unique to a Chinese painting. Lesson will start from simple stroke of the leaves and working towards larger and complete picture of grapes. This elegant brush writing technique is taught in a way that is easy to understand, yet meditative, enjoyable and relaxing.
