UniActive Swim School partners with Royal Life Saving NSW

UniActive Swim School is proud to announce that they are now an official Swim and Survive Partner with Royal Life Saving NSW, expanding access to essential water safety education for local families.

With close to $10,000 in funding provided by Royal Life Saving, UniActive is delivering the nationally recognised Swim and Survive program to 99 home‑school children and children living at UOW Bangalay student accommodation. Both programs run for eight weeks and provide school‑aged children with a weekly 30‑minute class focused on building critical swimming, water safety and survival skills.

Swim and Survive is a dynamic, evidence‑based program designed to develop confidence and capability in the water. Participants learn foundational swimming skills alongside personal survival techniques, basic rescue knowledge and lifesaving competencies- equipping them to lead safe, active lives in, on and around water.

Chris Fonoti, General Manager UniActive said “Becoming a Swim and Survive Partner is an important milestone for UniActive. It allows us to deliver high‑quality, nationally recognised water safety education to families who may not otherwise have access. Every child deserves the skills and confidence to be safe around water, and we’re proud to work with Royal Life Saving NSW to make that possible.”

“Strong community partnerships are vital to ensuring children develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to enjoy water safely. By supporting students and families living in the Wollongong and surrounding region, UniActive is helping remove barriers to participation and ensuring more children can benefit from nationally recognised water safety education. For children growing up in the coastal communities in the Illawarra and South Coast, where beaches, rock pools, rivers, creeks and public pools are a regular part of everyday life, water safety education isn’t optional, it’s essential. Programs like Swim and Survive help equip young people with the practical skills and confidence they need to safely enjoy the many aquatic environments our region has to offer. We look forward to seeing the positive impact these programs have across the Wollongong and surrounding regions.” Said Kate Makin, Illawarra Regional Manager – Royal Life Saving Society NSW

UniActive’s partnership with Royal Life Saving NSW reflects a shared commitment to reducing drowning risk and improving water safety outcomes across the region.  The Swim to Survive program at UniActive will be offered to more children in term 4, targeting families who may not participate in swimming lessons and miss out on the vital water safety skills as we approach summer.
