BEATING AFTERNOON SLUMP

We’ve all experienced having a productive morning, you think you’re winning the day… and then it hits 2pm and you’re ready to tune out and scroll on Tik Tok for the next 3 hours. An afternoon slump is way too easy to give in to, but here’s 4 tips to push through, and make the most of your arvo.

1. Break your time up into smaller increments

Sometimes it can feel like every task requires a massive effort to complete. When your attention span and energy are low, breaking your time up into smaller increments can make a world of difference. Try to pick an easy task like sending an email or washing some dishes and set a timer for 10 minutes.

If you have a bigger task that needs to be completed (like working on an assignment), break it down into subtasks such as writing your first paragraph, or completing your reference list. Put a time frame next to each task and slowly make your way through it. This way you are still making progress!

2. Pack a snack for energy

If you know you’re going to be out and about all afternoon, make sure to pack yourself a nutritious snack. If you’re feeling run down, a piece of fruit or a muesli bar could give you the energy boost you need! If a snack isn’t going to do it for you… make sure you’re registered as a Pulse Perks member to get 10% off your coffee order at most cafes around campus.

3. Take a walk

Sometimes a walk can be perfect to get yourself going again. A walk outside can act as a ‘circuit breaker’, cutting you off from giving in to the slump. Play your fav tunes, get some Vitamin D, and come back ready for the rest of the day. If you’re at uni, this is also a great way to make the most of our green campus! Or hop across the road and wander through Wollongong Botanic Garden.

4. Schedule activities you enjoy

If you have to have stuff on in the afternoon, at least make it something you want to be doing. Try and push through the bigger, less enjoyable tasks in the morning when you are feeling fresh, and leave the easier activities for the afternoon. If you are at uni, try and schedule the classes you think you will enjoy the most for the afternoon, or arrange to have a catch up with some friends in between your study sessions.

We hope these tips help you combat your afternoon slump. Remember it’s always okay to take a break to reset!
